Bobby Rogers is a Minneapolis – based visual artist. He uses his art to showcase the multiplex beauty of the world, his love for design, and fascination with futurism. As a traditionally trained Illustrator, and self-taught Fine Art and Documentary Photographer, he creates intensely expressive, celestial, nostalgic, and emotive work that highlights the strength and spirit of his subject matter.
Did you always want to be an artist?
Yes. I think. I mean, I wanted to be a church pastor at one point when I was hella young, but I guess God had a plan for me. Lmao
What’s your art? and what inspires you?
My art is emotion. My goal is to always capture the spirit & deeply emotive nature of my subjects. That is the energy I’m attracted to. Making beautiful art is easy. Creating art with the ability to immerse one in emotion is not. If there is no emotion, it is empty.
You are very political, and some have even joked you should be in politics, do you think art should always be political? What’s your take on art and politics?
As much as I can, I strive to bring a personal element to my work. And I’ve come to understand as a black man and an artist – part of my duty in the world is to use my talent, no matter how slight or substantial, to positively impact/improve the status of my people. My obsessions highlight the love I have for myself and my people. If the world could see the true beauty, resilience, and power of black people the way we see ourselves, it’d be in constant awe. If I can shift the narrative in any capacity, that’d be more than I can ever ask for.
One word that comes to mind: afro punk:
One word that comes to mind : Art in the Twin Cities
Is your art for you or the audience and why?
I will never publish a project that I don’t believe in. My work is a reflection of my existence. An existence where I am the first judge & my homies are the second. We’re all each other’s creative advisors. I definitely make work for myself and get so excited that I’ll hit them up like, “FAM.*insert Drake lyric*” & they’re like, “BRUH.*insert Kanye lyric* – We all keep each other on top of things.
Should Twin Cities art scene mimic NYC and/or what makes the Twin Cities Art Scene Unique
There is a unique appeal about Minneapolis that draws a certain kind of artist here.
Research. Whether they’re musicians or visual artists – people in the twin cities really study their craft and show love for their roots. Prince has a lot to do with that. It’s beautiful.
What’s the one misconception about you as an artist
I’m not sure of what people think or misconceive about me. Everything outside of my tribe doesn’t really concern me. I didn’t mean for that to come off as cold, but the question reminded me of when I was attending a lecture recently by Nouman Ali Khan. He spoke about how there are two type of evil in a situation when a misbelief is spread. Those who are evil and those who are careless. The careless are evil because they speak with no concern when repeating misconceptions. And to make a long story short, one should never be, nor concern themselves with that careless person. If you want to know something about me, I’m a reasonably extroverted & talkative person. 🙂
What’s next for you?
The whole squad is about to shift the paradigm. So stay tune.
